Synchcronization Plane

The synchronization-plane (SP) is required to enable one-way propagation delay measurements without using any external synchronization source, e.g. GPS, or purpose built hardware. The probes will exchange synchronization information, see The figure below , through the SP to determine time deviation between two interacting probes, e.g. clock skew and wander.

The SP may be configured to reside in the same network as the control-plane or in the same network as the measurement-plane, see The figure below , if these two planes are physically separated, i.e. different networks.
